Can You Guess The Most Popular Cosmetic Surgery Procedures?
According to the latest annual report issued March 1 by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), there were about 17.1 million cosmetic procedures – both surgical and minimally-invasive – performed in the U.S. last year.
While breast augmentation remains the most popular surgical procedure, Botox injections were tops among the minimally-invasive procedures.
Of particular note is the increase in procedures designed to improve the face, the growing popularity of using fat to fill and sculpt, and the rise of the labiaplasty.
We’ll talk about those trends in this issue.
The Face is Where It’s At
In 2015, facelifts had fallen out of the listing for Top 5 Most Popular Cosmetic Surgical Procedures, but the technique made a strong comeback in 2016 with a 4% increase.
Related to facial improvements are increases in rhinoplasty (up 2%); eyelid surgery (up 2%); Botox injections (up 4%); and chemical peel (up 4%).
About the increase among procedures designed to improve the face, ASPS President Dr. Debra Johnson said “Patients are captivated by instant improvements to the face. While there are more options than ever to rejuvenate the face, a facelift done by a board-certified plastic surgeon can give a dramatic and longer-lasting result.
The Growing Popularity of Fat Grafting
A hard-to-miss trend in the annual report is the increase in popularity of fat grafting. During these procedures, fat is transferred from your abdomen and is then injecting to lift and rejuvenate others areas, including the buttocks, breast, and face.
Fat grafts for:
- Breast augmentation skyrocketed to 72%
- Buttock augmentation rose by 26%
- Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures climbed by 13%
The Rise of the Labiaplasty
One procedure that generated a
heavy reaction in the media is the labiaplasty. Simply put, a labiaplasty is a technique to improve the rejuvenate the labia by injecting fat or lifting it.
In just one year, the popularity of the labiaplasty has increased by 39% with over 12,000 procedures taking place.
“As cosmetic procedures become more common, we are seeing more diversity in the areas of the body that patients are choosing to address,” explained Dr. Johnson.
