Why Millennials Are Leading the Boom in Plastic Surgery for Men
Plastic surgery procedures continue to enjoy increasing popularity year after year. But a new report from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) tells us that its millennial men who are leading the current surge among procedures men.
In this issue, we’ll talk more about the results from the report and talk about the reasons why millennial men are leading the plastic surgery charge.
Who are the millennial men?
Millennials as a group were born in 1982 and about 20 years afterward. The end point for being a millennial is 2004.
How many were surveyed and what plastic procedures do they want?
The AAFPRS surveyed 618 men. Of those, 31% — comprised of millennials – said they are “extremely likely” to have a procedure – both surgical and non-surgical.
As for what type of procedure they think about, the answer varies, and included:
- Correcting receding hair
- Having skin and eye procedures
- Botox treatment to smooth wrinkles

The removal of unwanted fat cells from the body; there were over 45,000 liposuction procedures for men in 2016.
- Male breast reduction
The flattening and contour enhancement of the male breast and chest as well as nipple revision; more than 31,000 were performed last year.
- Eyelid surgery
Popular among women as well, this procedure can be performed on upper and/or lower eyelids; over 28,000 were performed on men last year.
- Nose surgery
Whether it’s to decrease or increase the size of the nose, the goal is to reshape it so that it appears more proportional to the rest of your face; nearly 17,000 men opted for rhinoplasty in 2016.
This non-surgical procedure to make you look younger and fresher was performed on over 450,000 men last year.
What are the reasons more millennials are considering plastic surgery?
Reasons vary as well, and include:
- Wanting to feel better about themselves
- Remain competitive in the job market
- Pleasing a partner
- Looking less tired
The study also found that social media and wanting to imitate celebrities also played a critical role in the decision to have plastic surgery.
