The Mother/Daughter Plastic Surgery Trend
There are many fun activities mothers and daughters can do together to bond. A recent trend has added a new item to this list; plastic surgery.
Karen Stevens, a 45-year-old woman, has had several procedures done. However, Stevens did not become attracted to cosmetic surgery because she wanted to look like a certain celebrity or supermodel. Instead, the Los Angeles resident was inspired by watching her mother get “nips and tucks when she turned 60.” She explained that “seeing my mother looking so young and beautiful has inspired me to nip, tuck, fill and paralyze too. She is 72 now and does not look it at all.”
Doing Something Together
Many mothers and daughters have begun giving procedures as gifts as part of this new trend. Stevens, for example, says her mother is giving her “a Botox and filler special” for her birthday, which she considers “the perfect gift.”
Stevens and her mother are not alone in this trend. In 2008, the American Academy of Facial, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery reported a 34 percent increase in the number of people getting surgery with a partner, including friends, couples, sisters, or mothers and daughters.
The common trend seems to be mothers influencing their daughters to have surgery after the daughter sees how good the mother looks. However, some daughters influence their mothers to have work done. For example, there may be a woman in her twenties considering a breast augmentation who brings her closest confidante, in some cases her mother, with her for the consultation. This opens the mother up to the experience. Once mothers or daughters see how good the final product is, they often elect to have surgery themselves. While they may not necessarily have the same procedure as their mother or daughter, the process definitely gets the partner thinking about it.
Too Much Surgery?
Some ask if the mother-daughter cosmetic surgery trend is ultimately a positive or negative thing. Many doctors believe there are not any negative aspects of the trend, concluding that if the candidate has the right motivations and expectations for wanting an alteration she will generally be satisfied with the results. With the added bonus of a support network, like a mother or daughter, satisfaction is likely to be higher.
