Nipples: Is Less More?
Nipples. We’ve all got ’em. The size and pigmentation differ from person to person, but we’ve got them, nonetheless.
While it used to be true that we were pretty much stuck with what we were born with, innovations in plastic surgery techniques have made it possible to sculpt and change most parts of our anatomy – even our nipples.
In this issue, we’ll talk about the UK survey and its findings, as well as nipple revision in general; how and why it’s done and what to expect?
Why are people choosing to have their nipples reduced?
Nipple revision – more specifically, the desire for smaller nipples – is definitely a growing trend, as confirmed by a new survey from the UK.
There are a host of reasons to consider nipple revision, including:
-
- Areolas that are out of proportion to the breasts
Nipples that have changed after pregnancy and/or breastfeeding
- Difficulty in clothing selections and activities caused by existing nipple size
- Current nipple size is long or droopy
- Unevenness – or asymmetry – between the right and left nipples
- Stretching of the areolas following breast surgery
Of course, others are having nipple revision surgery because they simply feel that smaller nipples look better. It seems to be part of a new slender, ultra-toned aesthetic that is heavily promoted on social media channels – most notably on Instagram.
While the editors of Vogue magazine proudly proclaimed the era of cleavage to be over, it’s far too soon to make such a statement with certainty.
Are nipple revisions only for women?
Not at all! Men are seeking out the procedure as well. For many men, large nipples can be a source of insecurity and concern.
The good news is that because the male nipple is cosmetic, there aren’t other physiological issues to address.
What should I expect during nipple revision surgery?
Typically performed on an outpatient basis, the procedure normally takes between 1-2 hours. Once a small incision is made around the areola, excess tissue is then removed before permanent sutures are put in place in such a way as to minimize any scarring.
You should be able to shower and return to your normal routine within just a few days.
