Social Media’s “Selfie Revolution” Drives Plastic Surgery
“Selfies” have become increasingly popular on social media outlets. This social phenomenon is not only having an impact online, it is also having a surprising impact on consumer behavior. Some plastic surgeons credit the “selfie revolution” with an uptick in cosmetic surgery. According to Dr. Edward Farrior, president of AAFP, “social platforms like Instagram, Snapchat and the iPhone app Selfie.im, which are solely image based, force patients to hold a microscope up to their own image and often look at it with more self-critical eye than ever before.”
A survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) seems to support this theory. The survey found that one in three plastic surgeons reported seeing an increase in requests for facial procedures because patients wanted to look better online. Between 2012 and 2013, certain procedures rose in number including nose jobs by 10 percent, hair transplants by seven percent, and eyelid surgery by six percent.
Another area in which surgeons have seen an increasing trend is hand treatments. With so many young women getting engaged and plastering social media with images of their hand and ring, it only makes sense that they would want to look their best. Treatments for hands include microdermabrasion which can run $200 a treatment.
With these figures, it is clear the plastic surgery business is not shrinking. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the cosmetic surgery business was worth $12.8 billion in 2013. That is a 6.5 percent increase from 2012. That number is also expected to increase in 2014.
