Spider Veins: Let Our Lasers Light the Way
Unsightly varicose or “spider” veins are an issue for many people as they get older. Spider veins are common in both men and women, and usually appear in the legs and ankles. While they are not normally dangerous to your well-being, they look unhealthy, which leads people to wonder if anything can be done. Well, good news — The answer is yes. There are excellent procedures to correct the appearance of varicose veins, and the professionals at Sadrian Plastic Surgery are here to help you find the best procedure for your needs.
Normal, healthy veins carry oxygen to the heart through “one-way” valves that keep the blood flowing where and how it is needed. As we age, veins can get weak or suffer damage, which can cause blood flow to slow, back up, and pool in the veins themselves. When this happens, the result is spider veins. Spider veins appear as swollen and twisted visible lines just beneath the surface of the skin. While the legs and ankles are the most common places spider veins appear, they can show up in other parts of the body as well. This is a very common problem and, most of the time, it’s just aesthetic. But in some cases, spider veins can be painful or cause blood clots and skin ulcers. Please note that if your spider veins are painful or appear to be bleeding or ulcerating, see your general physician as soon as possible in order to prevent further health problems.
Most people will never have to worry about serious health consequences from spider veins. But that doesn’t mean they want to keep staring at them every time they look down at their own legs. Finding a way to treat or fix the appearance of spider veins is a priority for people who want to look their best as they age, because looking better can often lead to feeling better. Feeling good about yourself is something we encourage for all our patients, past, present, and future, and that’s why Sadrian Plastic Surgery is here to help.
While there are several methods for the treatment of spider veins, we want you to have the best possible option out there. In our office, that means the Cutera laser. Laser therapy for varicose veins works by sending pulses of light — lasers — directly at the problem vein. The laser causes scar tissue to form. Now, scar tissue isn’t normally thought of as a good thing, especially not in a cosmetic surgeon’s office, but in this case, it is. The scarring causes the vein to close. A closed vein loses its blood supply and, over time and with repeated treatments, eventually fades from sight. Closing those veins has no ill effects on your circulatory or cardiovascular health; there are literally miles of other veins in the human body that can take over the work.
This process has little to no pain; some patients experience a slight stinging sensation during treatment, which is easily treated by applying a topical anesthetic prior to the procedure — no needles required. Many patients see results after only a few repeated treatments, but not all. The full number of Cutera sessions required will vary from patient to patient and depend on many factors, including the number of the veins being treated and the severity of the “spidering.”
