What’s Behind the Brotox Trend?
The number of men getting Botox injections is on the rise, and has been for some time. According to reports from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there was a 63% increase of the number of Botox procedures for men between 2010 and 2015. As we reported in an earlier entry, there were over 450,000 non-surgical Botox procedures for men just last year.
So many men are having it done that the term “Brotox” is quickly gaining steam.
What’s causing this trend? We’ll talk about it in this issue.
How is a Botox treatment done?
Botox, which is a form of the FDA-approved botulinum toxin, is injected into the area you want to be treated. Typical areas include near the eyes, mouth, brow and other parts of the face that are showing signs of aging.
The Botox literally blocks nerve signals that would normally tell your muscles to contract, which would lead to wrinkles, crow’s feet and other signs of aging. The result is smoother skin and the elimination of wrinkles.
Why are more men having Botox treatments?
In a recent Huffington Post article, the suggested overriding cause for the surge in men having Botox treatments is simple: most are between 35-65 and want to maintain their competitiveness in a workplace they see as becoming more and more attentive to age.
One doctor quoted in the article said, “The younger and better you look, the better chance you have to stay in the market and compete; it’s that simple.”
That logic makes sense when you consider that, today, more men than ever are working later in life.
It’s not only the effects of age that men are combating; stress is playing a part as well. Stresses associated with fatherhood are well known, and can include sleepless nights that lead to wrinkles and dark circles.
Other men are turning to Botox for help in looking their best as they navigate the dating scene.
