      WHAT IS A TUMMY TUCK?

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure in which excess fat and skin is removed and, frequently, weak or separated muscles are tightened and restored. This combination results in a smoother, firmer, and more attractive figure, with the bulging fat, skin, and tissue gone. During a tummy tuck San Diego plastic surgeon, Dr. Sadrian, will place the incision as low as possible so that a bikini bottom or underwear can effectively hide the scar. Natural hills and valleys are created so that results appear natural and organic. The belly button will be repositioned if necessary so as to create the most pleasing outcome possible.

WHO MAKES A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A TUMMY TUCK?

If you are living with a tummy bulge, sagging skin, stretch marks, or your abdomen has lost its firm, youthful, and fit appearance, you are likely a good candidate for a tummy tuck, regardless of your age or gender. To undergo this surgery, you should be at least 18, in good general health, a non-smoker, and not have a medical condition or illness that could put you at risk. It is fine to have children after a tummy tuck, but pregnancy will stretch the skin and muscles, so you may require a revision if your results were affected. It’s important to bear in mind that a tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure, but rather a highly effective method of removing the fat lingering on your abdomen. For patients who have undergone bariatric surgery, a tummy tuck can be the ideal next step to tighten excess skin. All clients should have realistic expectations for what the surgery can and cannot accomplish.

HOW IS THE TUMMY TUCK PROCEDURE PERFORMED?

For our patients in San Diego tummy tucks may be performed on an outpatient basis, and a general, rather than local anesthesia, will most commonly be administered. This ensures that the abdominal muscles remain completely relaxed during the procedure. The size and location of the incision depend on the type of tummy tuck that will be performed. Rest assured that Dr. Sadrian will use an incision that will produce the least visible scarring possible.

After the skin and abdominal wall are separated from each other, the muscles are then repaired so the underlying structure is tighter and in a more youthful position. After the excess skin is excised, it is then re-draped over the muscles and sutured. The navel will be positioned, so it appears where it should after the changes in tissue and muscle. Whether it is reattached or sculpted will be determined by Dr. Sadrian, whose intention is always to provide the most appealing outcome.

WHAT IS THE COST OF A TUMMY TUCK IN SAN DIEGO?

Costs for tummy tuck surgery are based on facility fees, surgeon’s fees and anesthesia fees, among others. At Dr. Sadrian’s office, the ballpark cost of a tummy tuck is $13,000 to $15,000. A mini tummy tuck will cost $7,500 to $8,500, and an extended tummy tuck will cost $15,000 to $17,000. This cost can vary based on anatomy, operating time, specific surgical technique used, and more, but this ballpark cost does include all surgeons’ fees, operating room fees, anesthesia, and more. Many patients choose to add on liposuction, most commonly targeting the waist area, as part of a tummy tuck. While elective cosmetic procedures are not typically covered by insurance, our office will help you to finance your surgery by using one of our trusted healthcare lenders, such as CareCredit and Alphaeon Credit. We also take credit cards.

      RECOVERY TIMELINE

      Week 1

Prioritize rest and hydration. Expect swelling, bruising, and limited mobility. Sleep with your head elevated and take short walks daily to promote circulation.

      Week 2

Energy levels begin to rise, but continue to rest and avoid returning to work or strenuous activities. Swelling and discomfort typically begin to improve.

      Week 3

You may gradually resume light daily activities. Around weeks 2 to 3 is when most patients are able to resume light work and are comfortable driving again. Still avoid lifting, sex, and intense exercise. Mild swelling may persist.

      Weeks 4

Many patients feel beach- or pool-ready. Resume non-strenuous routines, but continue to protect incision sites from sun exposure.

      Weeks 5-6

Most patients can return to moderate-to-vigorous exercise, but listen to your body. You may still notice minor swelling or tenderness. For a traditional tummy tuck, most patients should stick to limited activity until after week 8.

      Months 3-12

Scars continue to mature and fade. Your final tummy tuck results continue to refine during this period.

Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Tummy Tuck Below

How does a tummy tuck help restore the figure after pregnancy?

During pregnancy, the six-pack muscles become separated, compromising the appearance of the lower body and reducing self-confidence. During a tummy tuck San Diego patients will have these abdominal muscles tightened and the skin redraped, creating a smoother, firmer belly and increasing your wardrobe options.

What procedures can be well combined with abdominoplasty?

A tummy tuck is a component of a combination treatment known as a mommy makeover, which may also include liposuction, breast augmentation or breast reduction, breast lift, labiaplasty, an arm lift, a thigh lift, and/or facial rejuvenation.

      What’s a mini tummy tuck?

A mini tummy tuck is a less invasive procedure which addresses only the lower portion of the belly, removing excess skin and fat with reduced scarring and downtime. Unlike during a traditional tummy tuck, the six-pack muscles are not tightened with the mini tummy tuck.

Is a tummy tuck effective in treating stretch marks?

A tummy tuck is a great procedure for those whose lower body has been affected by pregnancy, weight gain or weight loss, and aging. Stretch marks in the lower abdomen can be well treated with abdominoplasty, which helps to tighten and tone the skin while also strengthening the abdominal wall.
