We all want to look our best, regardless of age. That may ultimately be the deciding reason why the number of seniors (65 and over) opting for plastic surgery has more than doubled over the last two decades.
In this issue, we’ll talk about what’s behind this continuing trend.
Statistics Show More People Over 65 Having Plastic Surgery
In a report issued by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, statistics confirmed that more and more people 65 and over are turning to the latest innovative plastic surgery techniques to off-set the effects of age.
In 2015 alone, there were 39,772 eyelid and 37,632 facelift procedures ordered by people 65 and older. Most were between 65 -75, and were having their first plastic surgery procedure.
What’s Causing All This?
When you think about it, there really isn’t a surprise as to what’s behind this movement. Simply put, we’re living longer. Also, because the Baby Boomers began turning 65 about 6 years ago, the senior population is larger than it has been in recent years.
Additional factors include
- The impact of pop culture (with TV shows like “Nip/Tuck,” “Extreme Makeover” and “Dr. 90210”)
- Continued innovations which have brought procedure invasiveness and costs down
- People staying in the workforce longer
The last bullet is especially important because as people stay in the workplace longer, they are more apt to experience age discrimination.
Another factor to keep in mind is that today’s average 70-year-old most likely leads a more active life than someone that same age would have a few decades ago. The decision for them to have plastic surgery is a way to overcome the disconnect between how they look and how they feel.
