Love The Skin You Are In!
Sadrian Plastic Surgery does a lot of work with the largest organ in the body: the skin. We tighten, tuck and beautify your skin so that you have a more attractive appearance and minimize scarring and other issues that could lead to lower self-esteem. While cosmetic surgery is considered “elective” by the medical community, we feel that it can be an important part of your emotional health.
In order to understand the basics of how cosmetic surgery works, it is important to understand the skin itself and how it functions as an important part of the body.
The Skin: A Miracle of Diversity
While all the functions of the human body are fascinating and important, the skin is truly a miracle of diversity. The body’s largest single organ, the skin covers an average of two square meters and accounts for about 15 percent of the average person’s body weight.
Skin has three layers. The epidermis, or top layer, is the one we see. While this skin may appear soft and smooth, it is actually a layer of non-living cells that waterproof the body and control the flow in and out of many substances. Below the epidermis is the dermis which holds the hair and sweat glands, and finally the subcutis layer which contains the fat and blood vessels.
Scar tissue, while made up of skin, does not contain hair or sweat glands. Because of this, scar tissue often has a different look and feel than “regular” skin.
The skin completely renews itself every 28 days by shedding old skin cells and pushing new ones up from the dermis to the epidermis. This provides a fresh covering to protect the body and keeps your skin looking good. In some diseases, such as psoriasis, the skin replaces itself too quickly, causing white, dead, flaky skin to appear in large amounts.
In order to maintain healthy skin, you must consume the “Big Four” vitamins in sufficient quantities:
- Vitamin A for fighting sun damage and cellulite
- Vitamin D to reduce spots and growth
- Vitamin C to produce antioxidants and regenerate Vitamin E
- Vitamin E to protect against aging
