Life can take a toll on women’s bodies – particularly the breasts. One of the most depressing things to experience is seeing once perky, rounded breasts beginning to sag and droop. This common problem comes about as the skin loses its flexible, firm quality, or after the ravages of breastfeeding. Once the breast tissue has begun to sag, there is little that can be done to repair the damage other than breast lift surgery. Dr. Sadrian, a board-certified plastic surgeon, performs breast lift surgery in his San Diego office to help address sagging breasts.

What is a Breast Lift?
A breast lift is a surgical procedure to restore the breasts to a more youthful position on the chest, while reshaping the breast tissue to a plump, rounded look and improved cleavage. In many cases, the nipple/areolas are repositioned, so they are at the front of the breast, and can be reduced in size if large areolas are a problem. This surgery is the perfect way to restore breasts that have any of the following problems:
- Saggy breasts
- Excess loose skin on breasts causing a droopy look
- Breasts that no longer look full and rounded
- Unevenly-sized breasts
- Nipples that point downward
- Overlarge nipple/areolas
- Flat or deflated looking breasts

Who is a candidate for a breast lift?
Breast lift is a suitable procedure for those bothered that their breasts have started sagging or lost their shape or volume. Factors like genetic predisposition, age, hormonal changes, and pregnancy may make your breasts grow flatter, elongated, and pendulous, with your nipples falling below the breast crease. The skin around your areolas may also seem stretched, and your areolas may point downwards. While these changes are natural, they lead to severe self-consciousness and self-image issues.
You’re a suitable candidate for a breast lift if you identify with any of the aforementioned conditions. However, to qualify for the procedure, you must be in good overall physical and mental health with realistic expectations from the treatment. You must not have underlying medical conditions that preclude you from the breast lift.
Generally speaking, you would likely not be a suitable candidate for a breast lift if:
- You have a family history of breast cancer
- You have a history of bleeding or clotting disorders
- You consume tobacco or smoke regularly and aren’t willing to stop
- Your BMI puts you in the “obese” category
Will I need breast implants as well?
The breast lift doesn’t include implants because the procedure’s goal isn’t to increase your cup size but rather to “lift” your breasts into an upright position. Your surgeon manipulates the existing breast tissue to produce the lift and tighten the surrounding skin tissues.
However, you can combine your breast lift with breast augmentation—in that case, breast implants might be necessary. Combining your breast lift with implants allows you to achieve a fuller, rounder, and more uplifted breasts. While the breast lift improves the shape and positioning, the implants enhance the size and general voluptuousness.
If you’re already getting a breast lift, it’s a good idea to combine the procedure with augmentation for better results, but only if you genuinely want to increase your breast size or improve your overall symmetry. Dr. Sadrian will listen to your cosmetic concerns and your goals for the procedure in order to recommend the ideal treatment plan.

How is a Breast Lift Done?
This procedure will vary slightly, patient to patient, but in general, it proceeds as follows:
- Your breasts are evaluated so a custom surgical plan can be established.
- A date for surgery is set.
- You arrive for your surgery.
- You are put under anesthesia, so you don’t experience any pain or discomfort.
- Incisions are placed around the areola and vertically from the nipple to the crease of the breast, and/or below the crease or fold of the breasts.
- The breast tissue is lifted and reshaped, so it appears round and firm.
- The nipples are repositioned (with inner structure intact) to the right position on the front of the breasts.
- The excess skin is trimmed and removed, and the incisions closed with tiny, carefully-placed sutures.
What are the different techniques used for mastopexy?
Dr. Sadrian is a masterful artist when it comes to delivering elegant, natural-looking breast lift outcomes. He will select the most appropriate approach for your goals and needs after conducting an in-depth consultation. Below is an overview of each technique.
Circumareolar lift — When a woman has only a minor level of breast ptosis, this may be the ideal approach. Small incisions are created encircling the nipples, with scarring well-concealed by the darker pigments of the areolas. Dr. Sadrian can resize the areolas during this procedure as well.
Vertical lift — Here, the incision encircles the nipples and runs down vertically to the breast crease, creating the appearance of a lollipop. This approach is more appropriate for women with moderate breast sagging, as it affords the surgeon improved access and flexibility when removing excess skin, tissue, and fat.
Anchor lift — This approach is ideal for women with severe breast ptosis. The incision encircles the nipple, travels vertically down the breast to the inframammary fold, and then stretches horizontally across the base of the breast, creating the appearance of an upside-down “T” or anchor. This technique allows Dr. Sadrian the opportunity to dramatically reshape the breast profile for a more youthful and elevated final appearance.
After Breast Lift Surgery – What Should I Expect?
After your procedure at our fully accredited surgical center, you will recover for a brief period in our custom recovery area, after which you are free to return home – transported by a friend or family member. You will need help for the first day or two, so make plans for someone to stay with you. Your breasts will be held in place with a surgical bra, so they heal in place. You should plan to take at least a week off work with limited activities, particularly avoiding any motion that will put stress on the healing incisions.
Scarring After a Breast Lift
While no one wants scars, Dr. Sadrian is careful in his incision placement to hide the scars, and once healed, you can wear your clothing with confidence. His careful surgical techniques make breast lift surgery one of the most commonly-requested surgeries at Sadrian Plastic Surgery – new patients frequently come to us directly from word-of-mouth. We are very proud of our reputation for excellence, and for our many happy patients who refer their friends and family to us – thank you!
