Injectable treatments to help with wrinkles and folds on the face come in several options. Choosing which one is best for you can be difficult, and that’s why Sadrian Plastic Surgery is here to help. We offer a number of injectables, and we are always here to help you decide which one will get you the results you want.
Dysport is one such injectable. In some ways, it is similar to Botox — arguably the most well-known injectable. Like Botox, Dysport is an intramuscular injection, which is different from a dermal filler. Intramuscular means that this particular kind of treatment is injected directly into the muscles of the face, where it works to relax the muscles that create some of the folds and wrinkles that time, age, and the environment have caused.
Dysport is FDA-approved for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows, also know as glabellar lines. It is recommended for use in adults under the age of 65.
Like Botox, Dysport is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. In clinical terms, it is known as a type A botulinum toxin; this type of toxin is actually a protein that is highly refined in laboratories so that it can be safely and effectively used to relax facial muscles. It is also sometimes used to inhibit sweating for people who suffer from profuse perspiration. It was originally developed in the 1990s as a treatment for certain kinds of neuromuscular disorders, but has been in use for cosmetic purposes since 2009.
In many ways, Dysport and Botox work similarly. But recent research has shown that, in some cases, Dysport offers superior results. It has been shown to be faster-acting and also to last longer, which is an important consideration for many patients. Like all injectables, Dysport is a temporary fix, so repeated treatments will be necessary for results to keep lasting.
You may wonder how it works. It’s a very simple process that is performed in a short amount of time right here in our office — only ten to 20 minutes for most patients. There is no significant preparation, and most people return to their normal activities right after their treatment. A skilled medical professional in our office will inject Dysport into five different places in between and over your eyebrows.

Once injected, Dysport blocks signals from your nerves to your muscles. This blockage prevents the muscles from contracting, which in turn relaxes those stubborn frown lines. And since Dysport is injected into only those five specific points, those are the only muscles affected. So there is no worry about “frozen expressions.” You will be able to smile and express yourself perfectly normally, just with smoother, more youthful looking skin.
How long does it last? On average, the results you receive from Dysport last four months. But a study in 2009 has suggested that for some patients, results can last far longer than that — up to a year, in some cases. That’s a best case scenario, of course, so it’s important to go into your Dysport treatment with the knowledge that the average is four months before another injection treatment is needed. Your doctor here at Sadrian can talk about your individual expectations, as well as helping to determine if Dysport is the right injectable for you.
