Treating Gynecomastia with a Male Breast Reduction
Some males experience an overgrowth or enlargement of their breasts that can be compared to the feminine level or size. The medical term for this condition is gynecomastia. Gynecomastia can occur at any age, and can be a source of embarrassment, shame and low self-esteem for those inflicted with it. It can hinder the enjoyment of life for so many males, causing them to avoid certain physical activities that draw attention to their condition. These can include taking part in the enjoyment of sports and avoidance of situations that involve physical intimacy.
Characteristics of this condition can include excessive glandular development in the breast region. It usually effects both breast equally, but sometimes one breast might be disproportionately larger than the other. Excessive fat in the breast area and an overgrowth of breast skin are other common characteristics of gynecomastia.
Causes of Gynecomastia
The causes of Gynecomastia are varied. It can often times happen during the teenage years, or even middle age, due to hormonal changes that take place. Sometimes, the condition is passed on through heredity. It’s also sometimes a result of side-effects when certain drugs are taken. Obesity or general weight gain are other factors that can exacerbate or cause the condition.
Applicable Surgical Procedures
The surgical procedures used to remedy this condition fall into two categories. There is the excision technique and the liposuction technique. Sometimes a combination of the two are deemed necessary by the surgeon performing the operation.
In cases of gynecomastia when the major problems are an overgrowth of glandular breast tissue and/or skin, an incision on the affected breast or breasts is made to remove these excesses. This method is highly effective in cases when the nipple needs to be slightly relocated to a more natural looking male shape, and when the size of the areola needs to be reduced.
If the case of gynecomastia is caused by too much fatty tissue, the liposuction technique is used. After a few small incisions are made, a thin, hollow tubular instrument called a cannula is pushed through these openings. Varied liposuction techniques are used, but the main way is to move the cannula back and forth initially to loosen the excessive fatty tissue. The cannula is then used to suck out the excess fat with the use of a connected vacuum suction machine.
