Breast revision is a second surgical procedure for changing some aspect of a primary breast surgery, including breast augmentation. Undoubtedly, when you discussed breast augmentation surgery with your surgeon prior to the procedure, it was explained that a second procedure and replacement of implants would be necessary at some point. Dr. Sadrian provides breast revision in San Diego for patients in need of a secondary breast surgery.

Do Breast Implants Have Warranties?

Warranties on most breast implants are typically 10 years. The risks after that include the possibility of their deflating or rupturing—although many women have had them for longer, with no problems whatsoever.

Other Reasons for Breast Revision Surgery

There are other reasons a patient may need to undergo breast revision surgery. These may include dissatisfaction with some aspect of the breasts. Sometimes patients who have chosen smaller implants realize that their new breasts are simply not large enough. Going into the surgery, many women are concerned that their breasts will be too big but, once the post-operative swelling goes down and they have adjusted to the new breasts, they sometimes wish they had gotten larger implants.

Among the other reasons to have breast revision surgery are the following:

  • Capsular contracture, which is a complication of the breast implant surgery in which scar tissue forms around the implant (encapsulates it) and contracts until it become misshapen or hard.
  • Changes to the breast after pregnancy, weight fluctuations or aging.
  • Problems such as double bubble, symmastia and bottoming out.
  • Rippling, which is a condition in which wrinkles or ridges in the implant can be felt or show through the skin; it can occur with either saline or silicone implants, though is more common with saline.
  • Dissatisfaction with some aspect of the result, such as the placement of the implant or a desire for a softer, more natural feel, which would require switching from saline to silicone.

Procedures and Recovery

The procedure will depend on the reason behind the need for breast revision surgery. The second surgery may be similar in length and recovery to the first surgery, and you can expect a similar recovery time.

FAQ Breast Revision

If you have concerns about breast revision, we offer answers to some of the most commonly asked questions about the procedure.

What is symmastia?

Symmastia is a condition in which the breasts cross the midline of the body and converge; there is no cleavage. It may be congenital or caused by surgical process. It is more likely to occur in women with thinner breast tissue.

What is bottoming out?

Bottoming out occurs when the implant slides down along the chest cavity. The result is that the fullness of the implant is abnormally low, and the nipple is abnormally high in relation to it. There are several different surgical options for its correction, including the use of mesh-like substances for support & contour, which would be part of your breast revision procedure in La Jolla.
