Chemical Peels

Over time, the natural aging process and outside factors such as the harmful UV rays of the sun, pollution, cosmetics, and gravity can take their toll on your skin. These factors manifest themselves in deep lines and wrinkles, sun spots, age spots, uneven skin tone and texture, and loss of firmness and elasticity in your skin. As these signs of aging begin to set in, you may no longer recognize the face in the mirror. Wouldn’t it be nice to revitalize your complexion and remove years from your face at the same time?

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel from Sadrian Plastic Surgery is an easy, non-surgical method of facial rejuvenation that will improve the tone and texture of your skin. A chemical peel can treat myriad skin conditions including:

  • Uneven texture
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne and acne scars
  • Sun damage
  • Dry patches

Chemical peels achieve varying levels of resurfacing, depending on the strength and type of chemicals used in the peel, by removing the outermost layer of cells to reveal the vibrant new skin beneath.

How do Chemical Peels Work?

Chemical peels rejuvenate your complexion by dissolving layers of old, damaged skin cells so your body may replace them with new skin cells. These chemicals are specially formulated to meet each patient’s individual needs. Chemical peels vary in the depth of treatment from very light to deep, penetrating peels depending on the level of rejuvenation desired. These chemicals also work to stimulate your body’s natural production of collagen and elastin, which plump your skin from the inside out.

What is the Difference in the Depths of Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are typically performed at three different depths: light, medium, and deep. Light chemical peels remove only the outermost layer of cells to improve conditions such as fine lines and wrinkles, acne, dry patches, and uneven pigmentation. Light chemical peels are extremely gentle and require no downtime or recovery. Medium peels treat acne scars, deeper issues of pigmentation, as well as deeper lines and wrinkles. These peels remove the epidermis as well as the top layer or two of the dermis. Deep chemical peels will achieve dramatic resurfacing results, but also require the most downtime. They penetrate deep into the dermis, dissolving layers of damaged tissue, completely revitalizing your complexion. A sedative is typically used with deep chemical peels.

What Types of Chemical Peels are Available at Sadrian Plastic Surgery?

We are thrilled to bring you a variety of chemical peels designed specifically to meet your skincare needs. At Sadrian Plastic Surgery, we offer:

Jessner’s Peel. Jessner’s Peel is a medium-depth chemical peel that can go deeper than peels which use alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) alone. It uses a combination of salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol to penetrate the layers of your skin and stimulate new cell production.

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) Peel. TCA peels are medium to deep chemical peels designed to treat more severe complexion concerns. They are commonly used to treat issues such as deeper lines and wrinkles, acne, and uneven pigmentation. In addition to the face, TCA peels may also be used to treat the neck, chest, hands, arms. and back.

What Can I Expect During a Chemical Peel?

During your chemical peel San Diego plastic surgeon, Dr. Sadrian will cleanse your skin with a glycolic acid cleaner in order to prepare your skin for the chemical application. After brushing the chemical solution over the surface of your skin, he may apply multiple layers of peeling solution, depending on the desired depth of the peel.

You may experience a slight burning sensation while the chemical solution begins to work. This can be alleviated by fanning to keep it cool. Once your peel has been allowed to work for the designated period of time, the peel is removed, and a neutralizing solution will be applied to your face followed by a moisturizer and sunscreen.

What is the Recovery from a Chemical Peel like?

You can expect a bit of swelling and redness following your chemical peel, as well as flaking as your body sheds the outermost layers of your skin. For the deepest peels, this flaking and redness should subside within two weeks of your chemical peel revealing fresh, glowing skin.
