What You Know & Don’t Know About Liposuction

For many, liposuction is among the first procedures that come to mind at the mention of the words “plastic surgery.” One of the most popular plastic surgery procedures available throughout the world, liposuction can be a fantastic way to get rid of those stubborn pounds that no amount of exercise or diet can seemingly remove.

In this issue, we’ll explore the liposuction process a bit more, and talk about who would be an ideal candidate for the procedure.

What exactly is liposuction?

Often referred in pop culture as “lipo,” liposuction is all about removing excess fat deposits to improve the contours and proportion of your body. Through liposuction, fat is broken down and sucked away from the targeted body area.

As opposed to a tummy tuck, liposuction can be used of many parts of the body such as abdomen, buttocks, thigh, chin, calves, upper and backs of arms, and the back.

How popular is liposuction?

According to recent reports, there were 235,237 lipos performed in 2016, making it the 2nd most popular plastic surgery surgical procedure. The number of procedures last year was a 6% increase over 2015.

How is liposuction done?

The typical liposuction procedure will have the following steps:

  1. Anesthesia
Local or intravenous sedation will be administered so that you will be comfortable with the procedures.
  2. Incision
After small incisions are made, a thin, hollow tube is inserted to loosen and dislodge the excess fat. Afterward, either a surgical vacuum or syringe will be used to suck out the dislodged fat.
  3. Recovery
The typical recovery time for liposuction is fairly short, with most patients being able to resume their regular schedules in just a few weeks.

Who should have liposuction?

The ideal liposuction candidate is someone who is:

  • Within 30% of their ideal weight
  • Relatively healthy and no life-threatening illnesses or conditions that can get in the way of the healing process
  • A nonsmoker
